Its affiliated preparatory school, St Martin's Ampleforth, which lay across the valley at Gilling Castle, closed in 2020. The school passed an ISI inspection in 2020 and a subsequent inspection for material change, however failed an Ofsted inspection a week later, resulting in an admissions ban from the DfE.
“Serious failures” were identified at Ampleforth college, a Catholic boarding school in North Yorkshire that charges £37,905 a year. Ofsted inspectors found that arrangements to safeguard vulnerable pupils were ineffective, particularly outside the classroom.

Robin DyerWelcome from the Head, Robin Dyer.
Ampleforth survived. Indeed, under its able and determined headmaster, Robin Dyer, new in 2019, standards improved. This week, Ofsted published a further report on the school. It rated it good in all other areas, but still “inadequate” in safeguarding.
The inquiry's conclusions were devastating and last week it was announced by the Department for Education that Ampleforth would no longer be allowed to enrol new students, effectively forcing the school to begin closing down. Despite the grim catalogue of failures recorded by the IICSA this is sad news.
Ampleforth College is rated 'inadequate' by Ofsted: 'Serious' failures at £38,000-a-year Catholic boarding school as report finds sex between pupils, boozy parties, Class A drugs and concerns over safeguarding pupils from monks.
Robin Dyer, who joined as Headmaster in September 2019, is leading a drive to reinvigorate Ampleforth’s tradition of independent thinking and learning in all aspects of school life.
They learn how to think independently and have the confidence to lead, to work well with others and have the humility to serve. Equipped with the skills and mindset needed to flourish, Amplefordians are inspired to be caring and thoughtful citizens who make the right decisions in life.
