The parent portal app is a secure internet-based app, which helps parents view their children's school data, track their attendance, read comments from the teacher and communicate with the teacher concerning the child. The system creates a sense of responsibility between the school and the parent about the student.

Access the Parent Portal

The Parent Portal provides access to your online application, real-time alerts, and quick links to important info.

Submit an Application

Once you've begun an application in the Parent Portal, click the option to add a new student or continue with your application. Simply fill in the fields with your child's information, select the school you wish your child to attend, and hit Submit.

Complete the Admissions Process

In this step, you'll provide more detailed information about your child and upload additional documents, such as proof of residency and a birth certificate. For a list of specific documents that will be required, contact our enrollment consultants at 866.339.6787.

Next Steps

All families participate in a pre-recorded webinar with an enrollment consultant. Additional documents may be required to complete your enrollment, depending on your student’s situation, and will be provided within your Parent Portal.

Receive Official Approval

After successfully completing the enrollment process, your student will be approved. Please check your email for important information regarding your student's status and how to access the Online School platform.

Who can attend?

The California Virtual Academies (CAVA) elementary program serves students in grades TK–5 who reside in these counties.

What does it cost to attend one of the nine California Virtual Academies?

Because CAVA is an independent public charter school program, it's tuition-free. Enrolled families receive the Stride K12 curriculum, and eligible families receive a loaner computer, printer, and internet stipend.

What's my role as a parent?

As a parent, you (or another responsible adult you choose) serve as your child's Learning Coach. You'll work with your child's teacher to help record student attendance, monitor mastery of online lessons and assessments, and review student work.

Mastering Lessons

In the elementary grades, students are required to show mastery of each lesson by achieving 80 percent or better on all lesson assessments. If your child is having difficulty mastering a lesson, let their homeroom teacher know as soon as possible. Teachers offer many support sessions to help students gain mastery.

Working with Your Teacher

Teachers provide individual and small group assistance via online synchronous sessions called "Class Connects." Students are expected to attend all required Class Connects and meet with their teacher to receive course assistance, tutoring, and instruction. Class Connects vary by grade level and are scheduled by your teacher.

Time Commitment

Attendance is logged Monday through Friday; however, academic progress can be achieved during the weekends as well. TK–5 students are expected to spend approximately 4–7 hours on schoolwork per school day.

What grades are offered by the California Virtual Academies (CAVA)?

The nine California Virtual Academies offer grades TK–12. Our enrollment consultants can help you find the right school for your student based upon your student's grade and your home location.

What subjects will my child study?

Language arts, math, science, history, music, and art are the core courses. There will also be other courses in the appropriate grade levels, such as physical education. High school students also take a world language and have access to honors and AP® courses as well as a variety of electives.

Does CAVA provide textbooks and other instructional materials?

Yes. We provide the textbooks and instructional materials needed to complete the program. These books and materials are sent to students directly.* The amount and type of materials varies by grade and course.

Upon successful completion of course requirements, will my child receive a high school diploma as students in traditional public schools do?

Yes. As a public school in California, students can earn a diploma through California Virtual Academies based on successful completion of the school's graduation requirements.

Can my child work at their own pace?

The CAVA program is mastery-based. Students are required to work through the curriculum to complete lessons and attend live virtual sessions with their teacher throughout the school year.

How much time do students spend on the computer?

In the younger grades, many of the online lessons include offline work. Students in grades 3–5 spend no more than 15 to 30 percent of their school time on the computer. Screen time increases in middle school to 50 to 70 percent, and by high school students spend 80+ percent of their time online.

What is the grade required for CAVA middle school?

In middle school, student learning changes to a semester-based approach where students are required to earn a passing grade of 60 percent or above on their assignments and online lessons. Due dates are assigned to lessons by the assigned CAVA teacher for consistent, steady progress for academic success.

What is class connect?

While online lessons can usually be completed at any time of day, students are required to attend live Class Connect sessions with their teacher (s) based on the student’s individual needs. During Class Connect sessions, students will receive direct instruction from teachers and have opportunities to interact with classmates. In addition to regular, synchronous classroom instruction, teachers offer support or small group sessions to assist in student learning. Parents/Learning Coaches are encouraged to contact their child’s homeroom teacher any time they have questions or concerns.

Why is parent involvement important in middle school?

Parent/Learning Coach involvement is critical for student success, as middle school students continue to build their organization and time-management skills. Teachers set the pace of instruction, but the Learning Coach helps the student stay on track. Parent/Learning Coach involvement may vary per child and grade level.

How much time do you spend online in grades 6-8?

Students in grades 6–8 build self-advocacy skills and work more directly with teachers, but parent/Learning Coach involvement is essential for at least 20 hours a week, and roughly 50–60 percent of this time is spent online, with the remainder of time spent on reading and writing essays.
