Camp Thunderbird is a place where campers have fun and parents find an environment that will help their children grow in spirit, mind, and body. Our activities are designed to provide campers with an exciting, safe, and enriching summer experience that is appropriate to their age, interests and abilities.
Campers do not have access to a phone and are not permitted to bring cell phones to camp. Instead, we encourage campers to write home as often as possible. Parents may call their child's head counselor at any time for information or to express concerns. YMCA Camp Thunderbird offers a variety of care packages.

Counselors build a sense of belonging, achievement and relationships in small groups to help campers feel like part of the camp family! The Leaders in Leadership Training (LIT) program is a two-week experience at Camp Thunderbird that is designed to teach and inspire rising 9th and 10th graders.
Campers leave Thunderbird with a sense of belonging, a better understanding of who they are, close friendships, increased independence, and a collection of life skills that will carry them into adulthood. To our campers, past, present, (and future), Thunderbird is home.

Snack/Canteen. The Camp Canteen will be offered every afternoon for campers and is included in your Camp fee. Water, chips, pretzels, hummus, cheese sticks, and fruit are some of the snack options for campers. Campers are limited to one snack item and one drink per day at the Canteen.
Pack a nutritious lunch for your camper. A water bottle or drink is optional as we provide water at all activities and at lunch. Camp does not have refrigeration for lunches (please do not send milk or mayonnaise based products.) A small cooler with the camper’s name works best for packing a lunch.
items at home: Toys, radios, iPods/mp3 players, electronic games, cellular phones, and other electronics do not fit into this setting. Firearms, fireworks, knives, matches, lighters, tobacco products and illegal drugs. Expensive items, money, and trading cards at home.
Campers play hard and may get dirty —please choose comfortable appropriate play clothing, free of offensive slogans or symbols. Make sure your child wears sneakers and socks to camp daily.
Camper parents will receive a welcome email detailing instructions for completing camper health care information at this time. Prescription Medications. For campers who will take medications during camp, parents are required to provide the medication on Day 1 of the session at drop-off.
Lunch Information. Campers are very active and will get hungry! Pack a healthy, satisfying lunch every day if not purchasing lunch through camp. We aren’t able to refrigerate lunches, so please pack them in a small cooler/lunch box with ice packs or frozen water bottles.
For safety reasons, sandals and Crocs are not permitted during activities (Campers may wear sandals to and from water activities only) Pack a poncho or raincoat in case of rain.

Our summer camp programs allow for kids to enjoy themselves in the outdoors and camp facilities, while also adhering to the latest guidelines and recommendations from the CDC and Virginia Department of Health.
YMCA Camp Thunderbird is truly a unique experience and we want to serve as many kids as possible. We provide FREE bus stops throughout the Greater Richmond Community.
Grades: 5K-8th. Length: 2 weeks. Sunday, June 13 - Friday, June 25. This session is ideal for older, first-time campers or younger campers who want an experience longer than the one-week Adventure Camp.
Length: 2 weeks. Sunday, July 18 - Friday, July 30. July Camp 2 is a great way to enjoy camp life in a two week time frame, all the while experiencing the energy and excitement through its overlap of Main Camp. This session is packed full of skills development, out-of-camp trips, and special evening programs.
