May 26, 2020 - Today, members of the Castaic School Reopening Planning Task Force held the first meeting to begin planning for the opening of our schools. The Task Force is comprised of parents, site and district level administrators, CTA and CSEA members, and representatives from all areas of operations for the district. This broad cross-section of viewpoints will provide valuable guidance as we move forward in developing a plan to reopen. The plan will ultimately be approved by our Board of Trustees and submitted to the Los Angeles Department of Public Health for approval. While the timeline for this process is unknown, we feel it is important to begin the planning process.#N#We have adopted the guiding principles from the Los Angeles County Office of Education (LACOE), as they are preparing to release their framework for opening schools this week. These guiding principles are:#N#Keeping students and staff safe and healthy#N#Assuring continuity of instruction#N#Ensuring access and equity for all students#N#Communicating with stakeholders, such as staff, families, bargaining units and partners#N#Ensuring flexibility to meet the needs and advocate for all students#N#The Task Force reviewed and is providing feedback on the draft survey that has been created to get feedback on our schools reopening and distance learning. We understand that there were many challenges to rapidly create a distance learning program on the fly. We are looking to improve our distance learning program for the future in the event schools are closed again or for those parents that choose to remain in a distance learning program in the fall.#N#Please look for the survey to be distributed at the end of the week.
The Governing Board acted to authorize the following:#N#1. Classes will begin on August 11, 2020 , in an online format.#N#2. CUSD will continue to comply with LA County Health Order requirements as a means to keep students, staff, and families safe and to minimize the transmission of the COVID-19 virus.#N#3. Bring students back to campus as quickly as it is deemed safe to do so.#N#4. Staff will report to work as assigned for the start of the school year.#N#We have been preparing for this possibility and will be ready to start the school year in a 100% distance learning model. Distance learning will include regular schedules for students with live instruction, regular grading, and attendance. Schools will also evaluate learning loss and provide extra support when necessary.#N#We will continue to provide specific details over the next several weeks.
The Learning Continuity and Attendance Plan (Learning Continuity Plan) is a key part of the overall budget package for K-12 that seeks to address funding stability for schools while providing information at the local educational agency (LEA) level for how student learning continuity will be addressed during the COVID-19 crisis in the 2020–21 school year. The provisions for the plan were approved by the Governor and Legislature in June in SB 98 and can be found in EC Section 43509.
