The Junior School is extremely well run. Our child has flourished since joining Chigwell School. He has grown in confidence and is excelling in all aspects of life. We would highly recommend this school to anyone who is thinking of sending their child or children to Chigwell.
Find a way or make a way has always been the motto of a Chigwellian and it is that ‘can do’ spirit that we embed in all our children and it is that spirit that is so important for us all to have. We provide our children with the space to grow, not only as learners but also as people who will thrive in the modern world.
From Pre Prep to Sixth Form, our pupils grow throughout their time at Chigwell. A lifetime of learning begins in our purpose-built, state-of-the-art, Pre Prep. Striving for the best academic results while making learning enjoyable.
It is supported by excellent facilities, some of which we share with the senior school.
We expect our children to develop wider interests and our after school clubs and activities are second to none. From board games, to Korfball, to Stock Market club to Astronomy club to sporting and musical and drama activities, we want them to taste a variety of activities to see what suits them best.
Pastorally, the children are supported by the form tutors, Heads of year, Mrs Tilbrook our DSL, Mrs Botham and myself and we make sure that not only their physical health but also their mental health is a priority. We expect our children to make mistakes and learning from them is an essential part of their growth.

It is not know exactly when Church was built, but the oldest part is estimated to have been erected in 1600. There are many famous stories concerning the house, one being that Charles Dickens once stayed here, writing one of his novels – Barnaby Rudge.
Hainault House was built in 1874 in grand Victorian Gothic style and is run by Mr and Mrs Rabbitte, who have a young family. Mr Rabbitte is the Head of Geography at Chigwell School and his wife is a qualified social worker.
Harsnett’s takes its name from the Founder of the School, Archbishop Samuel Harsnett, Archbishop of York and Master of Pembroke College Cambridge, who founded the School in 1629 as a school for the poor boys of the parish when he was vicar here. Harsnett’s is a family home run by Mr and Mrs Saunders, who live there with their three children.
Sandon Lodge was built in 1870, and has a beautiful setting in the middle of the School’s 100 acres of grounds. It is run by Mr and Mrs Lord, who met while they were students together at Oxford University. Mr Lord is the School’s Head of Classics.
A committed team of staff work hard to create a caring and supportive atmosphere for the young people in our charge. Home-school partnership is also highly valued and the Pre Prep operates an ‘open door’ policy for parents.
We are an academic school with high aspirations for children and we believe in developing the whole child through a broad, balanced curriculum including outdoor learning, physical education and the arts. Children who do more, achieve more, and we aim to stretch and challenge all of the children in our care.
When it is time for children to move on to the Junior School, the transition is planned seamlessly to ensure that children’s needs are known and that they continue to be met in the best way possible.
The Pre Prep has been magnificent in delivering first class education and creating a most wonderful environment for kids to flourish. Our experience from the very start has been delightful and we are so happy our children attend such a school of stature.
