Through challenging curricula that are both hands-on and lab intensive, COSMOS fosters its students’ interests, skills, and awareness of educational and career options in STEM fields. Students apply to one of the four University of California’s COSMOS campuses — UC Davis, UC Irvine, UC San Diego and UC Santa Cruz.

While academic credit is not awarded at the conclusion of the program COSMOS is considered an Academic Preparation Program for which students who participate can indicate so on their University of California admissions application. Some UC campuses give special consideration to those who have participated in COSMOS.
Students who are not residents of California may apply, COSMOS can admit up to 20 out-of-state students each summer. Please contact the Statewide COSMOS office with questions about student residency status for application purposes.

Usually, COSMOS students have a GPA of 3.5 or above. All applicants must complete an online application as well as one personal statement. You're required to have at least one teacher recommendation but a second one is highly suggested.
The demand for admission to COSMOS is strong and has been since its inception. For example, of 4,833 completed applications for summer 2019, 1,060 (22%) were admitted, and 340 (7%) were wait-listed.
Due to the high demand for participation in COSMOS, students who have already attended any COSMOS program are NOT eligible to apply again.
The most popular clusters are the hardest to be accepted into, and UC Davis' COSMOS program has been the most popularly applied to one, for the biomedical science and biotechnology cluster. UC Santa Cruz's program branches into several clusters, such as marine mammals, oceanography and climate change.
Selection is competitive but if you don't apply, you'll never know! The program will serve around 200-225 students in multiple different STEM subject areas (clusters). Some clusters have prerequisites to ensure success in the program. UCI faculty teaching for COSMOS will review all applications.

Nearly all cosmos are annuals meaning they do not come back every year. In order to have blooms every year, you will need to resow the seeds the following spring. The only exception to this rule is chocolate cosmos, cosmos atrosanguineus, which is grown like a dahlia from a tuber and is a perennial.
Does COSMOS have a waitlist? Some programs have a waitlist, while others do not. See our Dates and Deadlines page for more information.
