Anon We are a very happy lower school family at Head Royce. There is no secret way to get into the school. The admissions people are just looking for the right fit. Your child's age, school readiness, personal flexibility, readiness for a big school, and ethnicity all play a role. Specific preschool doesn't matter.
If you are looking for a K-8 program, I highly recommend and hope you will take a look at Head-Royce School (although FYI, Head-Royce is technically a K-12 school -- Lower School comprises of K-5, Middle School comprises of 6-8, and High School comprises of 9-12).
She's bright, but she's Head Royce average - in a good way. When the students have graduated from Head Royce High School (upper school), they have the equivalent knowledge in liberal arts as an undergraduate college degree.

The Lower School provides a strong foundation in a wide range of disciplines through a whole-child approach. K-5 students learn through a dynamic and innovative curriculum that emphasizes hands-on activities, simulations, and community engagement.
The Middle School provides a developmentally-appropriate sequential program for grades 6-8. Students master the analytical, problem-solving, and interpersonal skills they’ll need for high school in a small, nurturing environment.
The Upper School provides a challenging and stimulating liberal arts curriculum that allows students to develop critical thinking skills, take intellectual risks, work in collaborative settings, engage in creative and imaginative learning, and practice ethical decision making.
It has been a period of juxtaposition for our Head-Royce community. On the one hand, we had the opportunity to celebrate the graduation of 5th, 8th, and 12th grade students and send them off on their next adventures with joy and hope.
The tragic loss of lives—those of George Floyd in Minneapolis, and before that, the deaths of Ahmaud Arbery and Breonna Taylor, among so many others due to racial violence—are unconscionable and call upon us to be visible in our outrage and, more importantly, our resolve to work for change.
Just a few short weeks ago, we were all still together on campus. On our last day, March 12, we said goodbye to our in-person interactions…for now.
For 133 years, our School has been a rock for many, and through trying times we have always maintained a focus on our core mission and values.
I am writing with a brief update on the status of our remote learning plans, given this morning’s announcement from the Alameda County Office of Education about their decision to extend all school closures until May 1, 2020.
This past week has been “otherworldly” as we all adjust to working and learning remotely. While I so miss seeing our students, I’m also very appreciative of the dedication, care and creativity of our professional community as we make this unique and challenging situation work as well as possible.
On behalf of the entire Board of Trustees, I would like to extend heartfelt gratitude and appreciation for how our entire Head-Royce community has come together -- from parents to the HRS Professional Community, to our students. Everyone is doing their part to support each other during these very uncertain times.
Hi its our first time applying to private schools. Our child is going into 3rd grade. We are applying to Head Royce and there is a virtual assessment as part of the application. What does that mean or entail? Thanks!
I’m looking at schools for my son who will be entering kindergarten. I would love to hear from parents at any of these schools to get current feedback on academics and teachers but also on Covid protocols. Also curious if they all have air conditioning.
We are relatively new to Oakland, only having moved here last August. We now find ourselves in the fortunate position of having to decide between Redwood Day and Head-Royce for our son for next year. He will be starting Kindergarten.
