Houseparent couples live on the MHS campus in a private apartment connected to a student home. There you’ll care for eight to 12 students of the same gender and age range. Becoming a full-time houseparent means building a life in the welcoming community of Hershey, Pennsylvania.
The application process for houseparent positions is lengthy. Over the course of several months, you will have the opportunity to learn about the position and assess if it’s an opportunity that fits you and your spouse.

Numeracy is an essential skill for life and maths has a strong focus throughout the school. There is a daily mathematics lesson for all children.

As well as the weekly class music lesson, every child has a year group singing lesson and there are three co-curricular choirs for enthusiasts and talented singers.
Personal, Social, Health and Citizenship Education is taught in a weekly lesson but is also promoted throughout all aspects of school life.
From Year 4, all classes have a weekly reasoning lesson, in which they exercise their minds with practice in verbal and non-verbal reasoning and problem-solving activities. We find that this lesson has a positive effect on the way children approach problems and reason in other subjects.

When first hired, couples start out as flex houseparents. You’ll shadow current houseparents to learn more about the role and best practices. Flex couples also stand in when a current couple takes time off. This is your chance to begin developing relationships with students and staff in the home life community.
