You will be able to register for your first semester classes, get to know Iowa State and important policies and procedures. It is also a great way to ease yourself into university life. Orientation is required for all new students, but you decide which option works best for you.

College life is an adjustment for most students. We highly recommend that your student be encouraged to stay on campus for most weekends (rather than returning home). Campus life offers many opportunities to meet new people and experience campus life, which helps students adjust!
Iowa State University (ISU) and the School of Education offer many opportunities that promote personal and professional growth. We have several departmental student clubs, and there are more than 500 ISU organizations that students can get involved in.
The Parents Advisory Line (PAL) can connect you with a variety of offices on campus that can answer your questions and provide you with information.
Be sure to stay in frequent contact with your student as he or she adjusts to college life. It is an exciting time, full of personal growth and exploration. Knowing that you are interested in what they are doing and what they are learning is important to them whether they demonstrate that to you or not.
Faculty members expect your student to study two hours outside of class for every hour spent in the classroom. For example, for each 3-hour class, a student should spend an additional six hours of study outside of this class.
It is expected that a student will take responsibility for his or her learning. If faculty assistance is needed, the student should contact the faculty member and request a time to meet during the faculty member’s office hours.
The learning community is a year-long program for incoming, first-year students. You will take common courses with other freshmen in the learning community, work with your peer mentor to register for classes, and attend a variety of social activities and field trips to enhance your college experience.
While most student information changes can be made through AccessPlus, name changes are processed via the Registrar’s Office in 214 Enrollment Services Center either in person or by mail or by fax at 515-294-1088. Two of the following forms of identification with the students' new name must be provided:
Third party access is an option in AccessPlus that allows students to grant access to selected personal information to a trusted third party. For example, Third Party Access allows a student to set up a special account for a parent or family member to view their grades and/or pay their university bill.
