As a university lab school we embrace research-based best practices for student learning. We recognize student needs differ, so we create flexible learning environments where students are able to learn both independently and collaboratively. Our long-term commitment to teacher training has been a staple in our school since 1972.
Students at the Lab School progress by increasing levels of independence and competence, not by birth date. Our school has long understood that children can contribute and flourish in a world that values self-motivation, meaning, empathy, and creativity over compliance.
Students “learn how to learn” through hands-on projects and small-group collaboration that are designed to tap their intellectual curiosity.
The Lab School of Washington could be the difference your student needs to thrive academically.
With your support, we can attract and retain highly engaged, specialized faculty and staff members, keep a low student-teacher ratio, and maintain our learning spaces.
Intermediate Science Teacher Elizabeth Bilbao won the first-ever Blue Heron Educator Award from the Chesapeake Bay Outward Bound School, which she will receive in October.
It is the partnership between the family and the staff that will help create the best possible experience for children. Families are invited to engage in ongoing communication with staff, to observe their child in action from the observation booths, to share their unique talents and experience, and to become an active member in the Lab School’s Family Partners Group.
Observation Booths. Observation booths are located outside of each classroom. Parents and other adult family members are always welcome to use these observation booths during school hours without an appointment. From time to time, the booths may be reserved specifically for larger groups of student observers.
Lab School students benefit each semester from university students being guided by master-level teachers as they learn to apply research-based best practices in our classrooms. Students at the Lab School progress by increasing levels of independence and competence, not by birth date.
